We are currently looking for an experienced Tax Accountant to join our large friendly team based in Birmingham. Although the role is based at our Solihull Head Office, we are currently employing a flexible, hybrid working model (2 days per week in the office).  This role is part of our Statutory Accounts and Tax team so offers the opportunity to get involved in the broader statutory accounts programme as well as having a specific focus on Tarmac’s indirect taxes.

The Tax Accountant will aspire to be a subject matter expert for R2R on tax, supported by the Assistant Manager, partnering with relevant key business stakeholders in order to prepare and submit accurate returns for Tarmac’s indirect taxes on a timely basis.

Preparing relevant reporting of effective financial information and management accounting at each month end and through the month as required. Part of a highly competent team, taking the lead on preparation of tax compliance and working closely with the rest of the team, also providing support to the wider statutory accounts and tax team, working in collaboration with them around any tax compliance deadlines, to enable the team to deliver the statutory accounts timetable. Contributing to the team’s high quality output and maintain accurate recording of transactions and ensure accounting is in line with CRH accounting policies and accounting standards, with the support of Assistant Manager. 

  • Preparation of Tarmac’s indirect tax returns (including VAT, aggregates levy, landfill tax and CIS), to ensure they are completed accurately and to deadline.
  • Preparation of the statutory accounts and tax packs
  • Completion of high quality balance Sheet reconciliations in accordance with guidelines and timetables.
  • Review of journals and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Prepare reporting as required for own area of focus including quarterly financial reporting
  • Input into or completion of Sox controls as required.
  • Play a key role in responding to audit requests or queries.
  • Ownership for process, policy and procedures for indirect tax compliance 
  • Supervising more junior team members, coaching and developing other team members including Assistant Tax Accountant and Tax Apprentice.

A fully qualified Accountant or nearly qualified ( ACA / ACCA / ATT / CIMA or CTA )

  • Previous accounts preparation experience an advantage.
  • Essential: Strong knowledge of tax and previous tax experience
  • Essential: Up to date knowledge of IFRS, UK GAAP and related accounting rules
  • Able to deal with large quantities of complex data – excel skills essential.
  • Has experience of an internal control framework, such as Sarbanes Oxley
  • Good understanding of accounting and tax principles
  • Has prepared both journals and reconciliations to high standard, and able to demonstrate what good looks like when it comes to narrating and evidencing journals and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Attention to detail, able to work to tight deadlines and able to escalate issues confidently
  • Good knowledge of accounting and financial systems
  • SAP system knowledge is desirable
  • BlackLine system knowledge is desirable
