Site Chemist – Bilsthorpe
We are recruiting for a Site Hazardous Waste Chemist to join our Operations Team at our Bilsthorpe site.
The Site Hazardous Waste Chemist is responsible for the safe acceptance, classification, treatment, and consolidation of hazardous waste in compliance with environmental regulations, company procedures, and health & safety standards. The chemist plays a key role in ensuring regulatory compliance and supporting efficient site operations.
Key Responsibilities
Waste Acceptance & Classification
- Inspect and verify incoming hazardous waste consignments against consignment notes and waste transfer documentation.
- Conduct chemical testing and analysis to determine waste compatibility and acceptance.
- Classify, segregate, and label hazardous wastes in accordance with ADR, WM3, and site procedures.
Site Operations Support
- Supervise and support waste bulking, repackaging, and consolidation activities.
- Ensure correct storage, handling, and transfer of wastes to maintain site compliance and safety.
- Liaise with site operators, drivers, and external contractors on waste-related matters.
Compliance & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of waste received, tested, stored, and dispatched.
- Ensure all activities comply with site permit conditions, environmental legislation, and company policies.
- Support audits, inspections, and reporting to regulators and management.
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Follow and enforce site safety rules and risk assessments.
- Provide technical guidance on safe handling of hazardous substances.
- Report any incidents, near misses, or non-conformances promptly.
Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and safety.
- Assist in training of site staff in waste classification and compliance.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Degree in Chemistry or related scientific discipline (essential).
- Experience in hazardous waste management or chemical analysis (desirable).
- Knowledge of waste legislation, WM3 classification, and ADR requirements.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a busy operational environment.
- Good communication and teamwork abilities.
