The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience is divided into 14 academic departments across three major academic Schools: Academic Psychiatry, Mental Health & Psychological Sciences, and Neuroscience.

Our School of Academic Psychiatry comprises of five clinical departments of psychiatry: Addictions, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic and Neurodevelopmental Science, Psychological Medicine and Psychosis Studies.
Â
These include more than 100 Principal Investigators, with research grants of ÂŁ30-40 million. We have programmes covering the whole spectrum of psychiatry from public policy to molecular genetics, from peri-natal to old age and from psychological treatments to brain imaging. Our work covers the entire life span, healthy adults and children as well as of course people with physical and mental health conditions.Â

About the role
The Senior Research Operations Manager within the School of Academic Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) will provide senior management and oversight across the School’s strategic and operational research activity, primarily supporting Departments across the School. The role will work across the relevant Faculty teams and liaise with key contacts in the university Directorates to ensure the effective running of the research cluster within the School.

Working with the Head of School Operations and Faculty Research Manager, the role is responsible for the administration of the School’s research portfolio, ensuring the streamlined processing of research applications and awards through setting and following standard operating processes and procedures and monitoring key research metrics. The role will provide high level research support, including strategic, financial, and resource information for the Head of School and Heads of Department, ensuring efficient and effective research support through managing a team of research support staff. They will ensure that work is properly assigned, adequate training and support is provided and develop a high-performing and solutions focused team.

The role would suit someone who has experience of managing and developing a team, is proactive in identifying areas for efficiencies through understanding day-to-day operational detail and linking to bigger picture initiatives and is able to build and maintain effective collaborative working relationships across organisational units.

The role will provide individuals with a wide variety of experience and skills working across multiple operational functions in a large and complex organisation, supporting the individual to progress their career within research and senior management across the University.

This post will be offered on a fixed term basis for 18 months in the first instance.
Â
This post will be a part-time role at 28 hours per week, 0.8 FTE. This FTC could also be arranged as a secondment opportunity.Â
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteriaÂ
- Substantial knowledge and experience of research support acquired through relevant managerial level roles, demonstrating a specialist level of knowledge and expertise.
- Significant experience of research grant management and embedding best practice around end-to-end grant support, including application of full economic costings.
- Significant experience of managing or supporting multiple large-scale projects / research grants.
- Highly proficient level of financial numeracy and experience of data analysis and reporting.Â
- Highly proficient IT skills (including Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and experience of utilizing specialist systems and software for research administration.Â
- Excellent administration and organisational skills to manage multiple competing priorities whilst ensuring a high degree of attention to detail.
- Experience of managing and developing high performing teams, embedding the principles of culture, equality, diversity, and inclusion across all aspects of the teams’ function.
- Effective at working independently and as part of a team, able to take own initiative with a proactive approach to complex problem solving.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of developing a culture of continuous improvement around systems and processes.
- Working knowledge of the external research landscape, discipline area and potential implications for the School.
