Summary

As a Senior Business Analyst at M&S, you will play a critical role in shaping and influencing the strategic direction of product and technology initiatives across our business. Operating at a higher level of complexity and ambiguity, you will lead the analysis of business needs across multiple domains, helping to define and architect solutions that support M&S’s continued evolution as a digital-first retailer.

You will act as a senior partner to Product, Engineering, Architecture, and operational leaders—translating complex, cross-cutting business problems into clear, outcome-driven requirements. Leveraging deep analytical expertise, advanced problem-solving skills, and strong retail acumen, you will drive solution design for initiatives with significant impact on customer experience, operational efficiency, and long-term business value.

In this role, you will provide thought leadership, mentor other Business Analysts, and champion best-in-class analysis practices. You will work across large-scale programmes, strategic transformation initiatives, and multi-team product areas, ensuring that M&S’s technology investments deliver measurable, strategic business outcomes.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and drive business analysis for large-scale, complex, and cross-functional initiatives, ensuring strategic alignment and strong business outcomes within Retail Store POS and Payments
  • Develop and maintain expert-level understanding of the application and technology landscape across multiple product areas, influencing solution architecture and long-term roadmaps including POS, Self-Checkout, Payments, Hospitality and infrastructure.
  • Define and govern end-to-end business processes, ensuring consistency, efficiency, and alignment with organisational standards. Ensure rigorous traceability from business objectives through to delivered solutions, enabling measurable value delivery
  • Shape strategic business cases and assess investment options, supporting senior product and technology leaders in prioritisation decisions. Build and maintain strong senior stakeholder relationships, influencing direction and securing alignment across business and engineering teams
  • Champion BA best practices, contributing to the development of standards, frameworks, and continuous improvement. Coach, guide, and support other Business Analysts across the product area

Who you are

  • Facilitate complex workshops and discussions to drive clarity in ambiguous problem spaces and elicit high-quality business requirements
  • Produce and maintain detailed user stories, process models, functional specifications, and acceptance criteria across multiple workstreams. Analyse current and future state business processes, identifying opportunities for optimisation, automation, and improved customer or colleague experiences
  • Provide leadership and direction during testing phases, ensuring high-quality acceptance criteria and supporting UAT strategy and execution. Translate multifaceted business and operational needs into robust technical requirements and solution designs. Partner closely with Architecture and Engineering to shape feasible, scalable, and future-proof solutions
  • Deliver clear communication and reporting to senior stakeholders, surfacing risks, dependencies, and strategic impacts. Lead training, readiness, and knowledge-transfer efforts for new processes and solutions
  • Manage prioritisation across multiple initiatives, balancing conflicting demands and ensuring delivery focus. Drive cross-team alignment and help remove blockers impacting analysis or delivery progress
