The Royal Ballet and Opera continues to lead the way in opera, ballet, music and dance both live on stage and through multiple digital platforms, from live streaming to worldwide cinema screenings. Our Covent Garden theatre has been at the heart of London and British cultural life for three centuries. We are home to two world-class Companies: The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera.

Our Technical, Production and Costume Department plays a leading part in ensuring our performances are of the highest quality by delivering technical excellence for every performance, rehearsal and event. With over 350 permanent staff supported by a pool of casuals the department is the largest within the RBO and covers everything from Lighting to Scenic Construction, Draughting and Design Studio to Costume.

Our Production Props team are responsible for the prop-making requirements of The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet and other associated companies. Alongside the Senior Manager of the workshop, you will be positively leading a team to output to the highest artistic standards and liaising with a range of internal stakeholders to ensure activities are delivered on time and on budget.

This role will suit a candidate who has a natural and honed leadership style, supported by practical hands-on experience that can be used to mentor and train workshop staff. A clear communicator and collaborative leader, you will be able to manage expectations, conflict and a range of internal and external relationships with creatives, suppliers and RBO staff. Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Substantial experience of practical prop making in a professional theatre, with experience of supervision of staff and working to tight deadlines
  • Extensive experience of sourcing and buying props and materials in-line with designs, historical contexts and budgets
  • An in-depth understanding of prop construction, repair, costs and timescale for the benefit of managing, monitoring and forecasting workloads
  • Competent bookkeeping skills including budget reporting and accuracy in scrutinizing and processing orders, and stock management; supported by excellent IT and system skills
  • Proven competence in the safe use of all workshop machinery and equipment, conversant with safety requirements and the ability to help manage the Health and Safety obligations of the workshop
